Getting into the Groove
It’s been quite an adventure since I arrived here in Japan. I’ve had plenty of trial and tribulations, and now I feel that I’ve finally picked up the tools I need in order to make my dreams come true.
I’m actually overwhelmed at the thought of explaining everything in one shot, so I’ll keep it simple by just talking about what happened today!

Late in the morning, I received a call from Andy. I’ve actually only known Andy (real name: Naoki Andou) for a week, but we have a similar attitude towards life and as soon as I had met him at a fashion related party a week before, we kick started our friendship.
He asked me if I had time later at night, because he got in contact with a friend who I might be intersted in speaking with, and she had a little bit of time at night. That person happened to be Ketty (real name: Keiko Sasaki), who is a prominent fashion stylist in Tokyo. (You can learn more about her here.)
If I think back to my meeting with Sugimoto-san back in March, the stylist that Nelson (most fantastic guy ever) introduced me to, I feel as if I’ve undergone a transformation of sorts.

So what have I learned since then?
Better networking, how to create a stronger first impression, how to control 上下関係 (hierarchial relationships, e.g. a feeling of superiority/inferiority), how to better use the Japanese language, more insight into the rules of styling, more clarity about my dreams…
And probably even a couple more skills that aren’t coming to mind at the moment.
I’m really glad that I decided to make the trip to Japan. It’s so easy to get confortable in a situation that you’re used to, but at the risk of stagnant personal growth.
And while it’s hard to say exactly how this has all affected me, I think it’s possibly the feeling that I have towards my future that has changed the most.
At first I felt that I had to pave my way to my dreams.
But now, I feel like I’m in a boat on a river with the current flowing forwards. So as long as I just let the current take me and not struggle against it, then I’ll reach my destination.
I wonder how that works. Has it always been that way, or did I somehow make the boat and find the river in these past few months?
But whatever the reason, the world better be ready for me, because here I come!

This post just made me smile a lot.
How’d the meeting go???
Finally! Another update!
It’s great that you’re meeting a bunch of people. Networking is very important. You can have all the talent in the world, but if you don’t know anybody, then your talents are useless.
Did you find a job yet? Everything costs money right?
I expect an update from you within this week. Hop to it!
@Katie
What could be a better complement! =D
The meeting was brief, but fantastic! Ketty was ready to help in any way that she could. And that reminds me, I should give her a call!
She said she would introduce me to the president of the company, who I believe is Australian. She said he probably had some of the very same issues I had in getting established here in Japan.
And now that I have a better idea of the visa process, I feel a lot more confident in approaching people about jobs!
@Hiroaki
Haha thanks for waiting! More exciting things should be on the way >=D
No job yet, but I think with the visa information in hand I have a lot more options. Even if not, I’m gonna get started applying for English teaching jobs. I think when I first came I was too preoccupied with doing things a certain way.
Now, it just feels like teaching English won’t be a problem at all. Sure, I have to devote my time to it, away from styling, but it’s another opportunity to network and get myself out there =D
